The year Santa met the family dog!

When my kids were still young, I thought it would be great to have my friend Mike dress up as Santa to surprise my girls.

Mike was an older guy with a similar build to Santa, so I thought he would be perfect.

We devised a plan to surprise my girls after school one evening. Mike would let himself in the back door, jingle some bells, wish the girls a merry Christmas and hand out a few early gifts.

On the afternoon of our plan, the girls were happily watching TV in the living room. Mike had messaged me to tell me he was outside, and I told him to let himself in the unlocked back door.

All of a sudden, there came such a clatter! I heard Mike begin to shout “ho ho…” but before he got to the final “ho”, Mike was clearly in distress.

My girls looked around at me with scared expressions on their faces, I told them not to worry, and I made my way to the kitchen.

I suddenly remembered Buddy, our Jack Russell! I hadn’t shut him upstairs like I was supposed to!

As I ran into the kitchen, the sound of barking and yelling was fading. I looked out the window just in time to see Santa’s sack of gifts left on the grass and Mike hopping over the garden fence with Buddy in hot pursuit.

The year of the Christmas miracle!

It had been a challenging year. I was a newly single father with two young children. Work had dried up, and I was feeling a financial pinch. I was struggling to afford to pay my bills, and I didn’t know how I would be able to make Christmas magical for my girls.

One month before Christmas, I told my children that there might not be many presents to open on Christmas morning, that Santa was very busy this year, and he would only be able to leave one or two gifts each. They understood, but I could see the disappointment in their eyes.

Then a miracle happened. Two days before Christmas, I was paid upfront for a job that would start in January!

I kept it a secret from my children, and I went shopping for gifts and an unforgettable Christmas feast. I wrapped all the presents, hid them in my bedroom, and waited for Christmas Eve.

Very early on Christmas morning, when I was sure my kids would still be sleeping, I sneaked into the living room to lay the gifts under the tree and froze. There were already dozens of presents under the Christmas tree – all with my name on them.

The presents were from my children. They had wrapped up their favourite toys and books and left them under the tree so I would have some gifts to open come Christmas morning.

As I stared at the gifts through watery eyes, I promised never again to doubt Santa Claus.

The year Santa gave me back my holiday cheer!

Last year I found myself without any Christmas spirit. I was overworked and stressed, and the last thing I wanted to do was think about Christmas.

I was driving to the mall to do some Christmas gift shopping and frowning and scowling the entire drive.

I knew I was being a Scrooge and desperately wanted to be excited for the holidays, but I couldn’t shake the feeling of impending holiday shopping horror.

I was stopped at a red light, mentally running through the list of everyone I had to buy for and everything I still had to get done before the big day.

A car pulled up beside me. Even through my closed window, I could hear a man’s voice singing. I look over at the driver in the car beside me, and I see an older man with white hair and a big, full beard.

He was singing along to I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday by Wizzard. He knew all of the words and was belting out the tune.

Sensing he had an audience, the older man turned to face me, laughed, and rolled down his window. I did the same.

“Merry Christmas” he exclaimed as the light turned green, and he drove away with the music fading into the distance.

I beamed. I turned on the radio, and it was playing the same song. I sang along, smiling until I reached the mall, filled with holiday cheer.

I am sure that the man was Santa. Who else could it have been?!
